DAY 1
We have arrived safely in Guatemala! We spent last evening with our host families in Cuidad Vieja and slept to the sound of rain falling on the tin roofs all night - accompanied occasionally by roosters, firecrackers and the sounds of other animals and vehicles. This morning we ventured into Antigua and, under still overcast skies, went on a walking tour of this beautiful colonial town. The students (Camden Carter, Rachel Hawes, Erica vanDissel, Gabriel Evensen, Amy Rawn, Izzie Werman, Sammy Lowell, Lauri Alvarez, Phebe Miner) are enjoying the food, sights & sounds. They have declared more than once how excited/surprised they are how much Spanish they are understanding and how well Guatemalans understand them! More photos and commentary to come! This afternoon we will learn about traditional Mayan customs and how to make tortillas.
